Single dental implants

A missing tooth affects eating, speaking and appearance. Dental Implant Suite provides personalised assessments to determine suitable implant replacement options.

Who a single
implant may suit

People consider a single dental implant for many different reasons. For some, it’s about restoring function after losing a tooth. For others, it’s about maintaining the appearance of their smile or exploring an alternative to a bridge or denture.

Whether a dental implant is appropriate for you depends on several factors, including your oral health, bone volume, medical history and individual treatment goals. During your consultation, we’ll carefully assess your circumstances and discuss whether a dental implant or another treatment option is likely to be the most suitable approach.

How a Single
Dental Implant Works

A single dental implant replaces both the visible tooth and the root beneath it, using a titanium implant placed in the jawbone and a custom-made crown on top. The implant acts as an artificial root, integrating with the bone to form a stable foundation. The crown is designed to match your surrounding teeth. Unlike a bridge, an implant is supported by the jawbone itself, so adjacent teeth can often remain untouched

During your consultation, we’ll assess whether a single dental implant is suitable for your circumstances and explain the treatment process, alternatives, benefits and potential risks, so you can make an informed decision about your care.

The 3-step
treatment process

Consultation and Treatment Planning

01

Your journey begins with a comprehensive assessment. We review your dental and medical history, examine your oral health and take any necessary scans or radiographs to assess the available bone and surrounding structures.

Following your assessment, we’ll discuss whether a dental implant is an appropriate treatment option, explain any alternatives that may be available, and outline the potential benefits and risks. You’ll receive a personalised treatment plan, including a detailed cost estimate and expected treatment timeline.

Implant Placement and Healing

02

If a dental implant is suitable for you, it is placed into the jawbone, usually under local anaesthetic. A healing period then allows the implant to integrate with the surrounding bone and create a stable foundation for the final restoration.

For many patients, healing takes around three months, although treatment timelines may vary, especially if bone grafting or other preparatory procedures are needed. Where clinically appropriate, a temporary tooth may be provided during the healing period.

Final Restoration and Ongoing Care

03

Once healing is complete, we take a digital impression of the implant to design your custom-made crown. The crown is individually crafted to complement your surrounding teeth and smile.

In most cases, the final restoration process takes approximately two weeks from the impression appointment to the placement of the completed crown. Following treatment, we’ll provide guidance on caring for your implant and recommend regular reviews to help maintain its long-term health and function.

    FAQs

Answers to some of the questions patients ask us most

Dental implants are a suitable option for many adults, however suitability varies from person to person. Factors such as your oral health, bone volume, medical history and lifestyle can all influence whether implant treatment is appropriate. Certain health conditions, medications and habits may also affect healing. If the adjacent teeth are healthy, sometimes a porcelain bridge might be another suitable option as an alternative.

Dental implant treatment is typically completed over several months. This allows time for the implant to heal and integrate with the surrounding bone before the final crown is fitted. Treatment timelines vary depending on your individual circumstances and whether any preparatory procedures are required. In aesthetic cases, we will provide temporary solutions so you don’t walk around with a missing tooth.

Dental implants are usually placed under local anaesthetic, helping to keep you comfortable during the procedure. As with any dental treatment, individual experiences vary, and some tenderness, swelling or discomfort may occur during the healing period. We’ll explain what to expect before treatment and provide guidance on post-operative care and recovery. Usually panadol or neurofen will be sufficient for post operatory healing.

Dental implants and dental bridges are both established treatment options for replacing a missing tooth. Each approach has its own advantages and considerations, and the most suitable option depends on your oral health, treatment goals and individual circumstances. During your consultation, we’ll discuss the available options and help you make an informed decision

Like all surgical and dental procedures, dental implant treatment carries potential risks and complications. These may include infection, delayed healing, implant failure, gum or bone-related complications and other risks specific to your circumstances. Before proceeding with treatment, we’ll discuss the potential benefits, risks and alternatives relevant to your case.

Dental implants require ongoing care, just like natural teeth. Good oral hygiene, including regular brushing, cleaning between the teeth and routine dental examinations, plays an important role in maintaining the health of the implant and surrounding tissues over time. We’ll provide personalised instructions on caring for your implant following treatment.

Some private health insurance policies with dental cover may contribute towards a portion of the treatment cost. As benefits vary between insurers and levels of cover, we recommend contacting your health fund directly to confirm what may be available under your policy.
